The meaning of the color of the poppy

White poppies – Mostly used for funerals and memorials in the eastern part of the globe, where it means sleep and peaceful rest in the western regions.

Red poppies – Remembrance of fallen soldiers that have passed away in war

Purple, pink, blue poppies – Success, imagination and luxury

How to grow a poppy plant in Calgary:

It’s very easy to grow poppy plants. they prefer full sun to partial shade. they can grow in either wet or dry soil conditions.

When planting they should be spaced approx 8″-18″ apart and will grow approx 2-2 1/2 feet tall. poppies look much better grouped together. Early summer to midsummer they will quickly bloom and require little care from there. Adding mulch around the plants will help keep the weeds down and the mulch will retain the moisture for the plants roots to feed.

History of the poppy

The remembrance day poppy has been used since 1921 to commemorate military personal who died in battle. Inspired by the poem “in Flanders field” written by Moina Michael. Today poppies are mostly used in Canada, United kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.
