Top Residential Landscape Gardening Tips

Spring and summer are the times when we move out of our Calgary winter hibernation and venture into the yard.  Winter was the time we planned all of our landscaping ideas and now is the time we can put them into effect.

You can get a lot of mileage from the exterior of your home with a good residential landscaping design.  Using natural elements of flowers, trees, and shrubbery to inanimate seating, stonework, and fire pits will all mean greater enjoyment for you and an improved resale price when it is time to move on.

Seating is one of the easiest places to start.  Begin with a flat surface like a patio.  If flat is not the way to describe your area, opt for a deck so that you can even out the area, give yourself a nice vantage point, and create a new “room” outdoors.  If you don’t want to go that far, lay down some gravel or pebbles, add chairs and a table and you are ready.  If you go this route, just be sure to surround the area with some landscaping edging to define the area and to prevent the rock from infiltrating into the grass, which could give the lawn mower a nasty surprise.

Walkways and paths are both practical and artistic.  They can be a straight shot from one area to another or wind around like a small stream.  It also means that your morning walk doesn’t need to be through the dew-laden grass.

Don’t discount raised beds.  They are pragmatic since you won’t need to crawl around to work in the bed.  They can also be artistic in their placement.  Add a cross piece and you can have a bench to enjoy your landscaping from different angles.

Sheds don’t have to be the run down building, nor do they have to be pre-fab from a big box store.  Whether you use it for storage or as a place for inspiration, privacy, or creativity, paint it, add curtains and window boxes.  Make it look like a playhouse or mimic your home.  Put a chair or two outside for visitors.

Side yards are frequently overlooked.  If you have a privacy fence between you and your neighbors, paint a mural on your side and add a stone walkway to make the area more accessible.  A friendly gate will complete the area.  There are a number of plants that can thrive on low light, so investigate adding a parallel garden to enhance the area.
